Uncovering the ecological exploitation of Alibaug’s waters, Plastic Selves lets the seas speak for themselves in personal, expressionistic and looming voices.
Immersing us in an evocative audio-visual experience, the film turns to the children first as they play on the beach, haggling to bury their own in the sand while a mobile crane plants tetrapods nearby. The heave and toil of industry takes over, flowing into wandering conversations on disease as murky waves run onto the sand. The fisherfolk of Alibaug have to work far out in the ocean to avoid the oil and smell, but ecological revenge is just around the corner.
Broken branches, plastic waste, and polluted waters are regurgitated back onto the shore; but it is the memories that are stained the most. Uncomfortable recollections from locals pour out on a myriad of haunting dissolves, and as the light fades from the shores, the film takes us into the deep ocean waters as a confession is heard; a personal confession that extrudes the individual reality that permeates through the entire film.
